Guide to the Teaching Australian Literature Resource
The Teaching Australian Literature Resource aims to house and correlate all information on the teaching of Australian literature in tertiary institutions in Australia and overseas allowing users of the site to browse the variety of units as well as see the trends and relationships in this area.
Don't forget, this is a community driven web space. Please help to build this by giving us feedback and new information on the teaching of Australian literary texts where you are.
Quick search
To quickly find a specific text, author, institution or unit, try using the search field on the top right of each page.
Menu Options
Institutions - Universities and Colleges teaching Australian literary texts
The first menu group on the left gives a list of all the institutions that have so far been recorded. Each institution page includes a list of all the units it teaches as well as a tally and list of all the texts and authors that can be found in these units' reading lists. There is also lists of organisational bodies within the institution as well as the degrees that are being offered that include relevant units. *
The other two menu items in this group show units grouped by institution and a graph showing the distribution of units by context ("English Literature", "Film/TV" etc).
Australian Literary Texts
The second group of menu items concerns texts. Texts can be searched using a more complex search form than the one at the top right of each page, enabling you to search for texts of a certain form or genre, texts published between certain periods, texts set in a certain time or place or texts about a certain topic. Texts by authors of a certain name, heritage or birthplace can also be selected.
There is also a full list of texts in alphabetical order and a full list of texts listed in order of the year they were first published.
As well as this there is a list of the texts which appear on the most reading lists of units recorded in the database so far. There are also graphs showing the distribution of texts across form and genre.
Authors in the Teaching Aust. Lit. Resource
The third group of menu items concerns authors. There is an advanced search form which can be used to search for authors by name, heritage, year of birth, genre and form of writing, text setting, topic or title. **
There are also links to lists of authors sorted alphabetically and by year of birth, and a list of the authors that appear on the most reading lists of units recorded so far in the database.
* Please note that these lists may not be comprehensive and that the institution's web site should be visited for definitive information ** Please note that the searches of texts by author are performed only on those texts that appear within the Teaching Australian Literature Resource. For example, if we chose the text form "Poetry", "Malouf, David" would not show up in the search results because none of his poetry is entered as being taught in an institution even though he has published a great deal of poetry. If we searched using the text forms "Novel" or "Short Story" we would find "Malouf, David" as one of the results as his novels and short stories are recorded as being taught in institutions.
