This topic aims to offer a snapshot of the ways in which Australia and Australians are represented in literature and film in contemporary Australia. Two criteria we applied when choosing texts for the topic were that they be contemporary and have audience appeal. We have attempted to choose writers and filmmakers whose works reflect current national preoccupations and general trends in literature and film in this country. We hope you find our selection stimulating and challenging. Some of the issues we will explore in this topic include: national identity, post-colonialism, gender, sexuality, memory, past/present, truth, life/death, place/space, multiculturalism, regionalism and isolation.
